Real Reform NOW!

Sustainable agriculture, organic, the "good guys"
Self-regulation of a billion dollar industry simply does not work. Given that caveat, I am upset that industry labels at large cannot be trusted, which is why I continue to shop with small businesses like organic South River Miso who have an eco-certified digital footprint (Twitter, YouTube Channel, Facebook, and website). For 3 decades I have watched their eco-footprint, applauded their wise land management and production, and continue to support them.

But unfortunately, billion dollar business cannot be trusted with self-regulation, as this most recent and shocking informations shows. Enter the bad guys--because they lie with their labels. From the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics:
Did you hear the news? On Tuesday, California’s Department of Toxic Substances revealed that a variety of nail polishes contain high levels of hazardous chemicals despite product labels claiming otherwise. These chemicals, dibutyl phthalate and toluene, have been linked to birth defects, asthma and other chronic health conditions.
Labels shouldn’t lie, and whether you’re a nail salon worker or taking your daughter out for a mani-pedi, you should be able to trust that the products you’re using are safe.
This is yet another example of industry self-regulation gone wrong—tell Congress it’s time to fix our broken cosmetics laws now!
The good news: Congress is finally paying attention. Last month the House held the first hearing on cosmetics safety in 30 years and is considering updating our 70 year old cosmetics laws.
The bad news: The big cosmetics companies are pushing hard and spending big to keep the broken status quo in place—and we need your help to push back! Help us tell Congress, enough is enough! We need real reform now! Our message is simple: Any new laws must get rid of the worst chemicals in cosmetics that can cause cancer or reproductive harm. They must also require companies to be transparent and honest about what’s in their products and they must include a strong safety standard to make sure decisions about ingredient safety protect the most vulnerable populations – babies, children, pregnant women and workers. New laws must also ensure that states, like California, keep their right to regulate toxic chemicals to protect people’s health.
P.S. We’re a lean, mean, grassroots-powered machine but are in the midst of a David and Goliath battle in DC--can you chip in $10 today to help us push back against the cosmetics industry’s multi-million dollar campaign to stop real reform in its tracks?
Check out the video that began the campaign. AND check out their YouTube Channel. Game changer, I promise you. Not to overwhelm you, but your cleaning products are toxic too, likely. But that's another post.

ONE INGREDIENT--ARGON OIL! GET SMART!
So here's the skinny. Make safe choices. In a tight economy, it might be hard to send $10 to a watchdog organization that works to make cosmetics safe. But you can make wise choices and choose to use cosmetics that ARE safe. I recommend Josie Maron's 100% pure Argon Oil; been using it for half a year and look younger than ever. Get over the industry's hype about oil; whether you have oily skin or acne, the oil works to balance, smooth, and improve your skin's overall texture. Begin simply and start throwing out the toxins you spread on your largest organ--your skin.

Alex's Lemonade Stand: Fighting Childhood Cancer

https://www.alexslemonade.org/
Predictions for 2030 suggest that every family will have a family member diagnosed with cancer. Current statistics are frightening. That's a scary statistic, but even more heart rending when cancer attacks children. I shudder when I hear that yet another friend or family member is diagnosed. In our school building alone, we could start a cancer support group, with 2 students and 5 faculty/staff members afflicted with cancer.

I subscribe to  Alex's Lemonade Stand on YouTube, so I receive each new video in a timely way. With sadness but with equal or more hope, I would like to share the current video, hoping that you will reach into your hearts and wallets to contribute $10 to this important cause.

Cancer Biology Playlist

Krause's EdTech/Tutorials Playlist
Dianne Butler Krause is one amazing tech savvy instructional coach adept in technology integration. When I was perusing her educational wiki, I learned that you could create a playlist on YouTube. Of course, I should have know that already, but I am newer to YouTube, despite its ubiquity. I messaged Dianne to discover how she created this effect, and her answer was a playlist. However, the same interface is not available today.

Click right or left arrows to navigate playlist
There are many ways to aggregate videos, like VodPod, Vimeo, and similar Web 2.0 tools, but a playlist on YouTube for YT videos is easy beezy, so I tried it, and I like it, but with one caveat. To access the list of related videos, you need to click the arrows on the right or left side to navigate to the list.

Here's my current playlist for Cancer Biology. Over time it will grow, and I welcome your suggestions for additions.

Confronting Cancer

Cutting to the Chase

In this post I am going to suggest you do 3 things to help yourself in confronting cancer, and an extra credit. They appear summarized at the end of this post, so cut to the chase if you want the bottom line, sans frills.

Confronting cancer is an onerous and continuous task. It seems like years ago, not months that my cancer diagnosis changed my life ~ for the better. One of the first online sites I found in user-friendly language was The Cancer Project, and for relevant research and seasonal information, it is simply hard to beat. Each month I receive a newsletter and take to heart things that help me navigate cancer. You can join this community and subscribe to their newsletter by clicking the SIGN UP image. (1)

Did you know The Cancer Project has a growing presence on YouTube, with interesting and helpful videos for the cancer patient and family on The CancerProject Channel. You can subscribe to this channel using your YouTube or Google account. Either way, new "issues" will appear in your channel or Google Reader, or you can check the CPC regularly. (2)

July's issue promotes cancer prevention and survival by "understanding the link between nutrition and cancer." I love their videos because they cut to the chase and give you information you can use easily. Great tutorials that do not under-or-overwhelm. They're just right. Take a look at this short (2:55) How To Grill Healthy Foods.

The folks at The Cancer Project follow up this video with a great article on The Five Worst Foods to Grill. Unfortunately, steak and chicken top the list, but I was surprised to find salmon grilled with skin on also hitting the big 5. For the list to make an impact (and perhaps a change in your grilling choices), you need to know that HCAs are "heterocyclic amines (HCAs), a cancer-causing chemical produced by high heat in many commonly barbecued meats." Simple translation: HCA = cancer-causing chemical. The greater the presence of HCAs in a grilled food, the greater the risk of eating a cancer-causing food. Here's their list:

Years ago, Adelle Davis was a household word as the first lady of nutrition, and she needed no introduction. She was responsible in her era for promoting the notion that you are what you eat, so eat whole foods without additives. We are finally getting back to Adelle's dictum, if only because we are learning that there IS a connection between what we eat and cancer. But that's another post.

Now that you know much of what you love to grill and eat may add to the toxicity of your cancer living within your body, what do you cook and consume? The simple solution: every Monday you can find healthy recipes that will help your beating back cancer if you subscribe to weekly recipes from The Cancer Project. You'll be happy to find ingredient lists and instructions from cancer nutrition experts that will put you on your road to wellness. (3)

What can YOU do in confronting cancer? 3 Things
  1. Subscribe to The Cancer Project newsletter.
  2. Subscribe to The CancerProject Channel on YouTube.
  3. Subscribe to The Cancer Project Weekly Recipes.

Laughter IS The Best Medicine!

I found this video from my good friend and DEN GURU Tim Childers on Facebook. It popped into my wall feed at a time when I really needed a good laugh. I love this video so much it remains on my bookmark toolbar, a close click away. Much of what he says we can all relate to, and in the doing, find that deep and continuous laugh we all need. Brian Regan's "Doctor" segment resonates, especially in the pressure segment. It was right after my bone marrow test that I found this clip, and as anyone who had a bone marrow procedure knows, I needed this laugh. You might want to check out his other videos as well. He's one funny guy. Food for laughs.
